Lady Dawgs drop match to Douglas, beats Buffalo at home

DOUGLAS – The Lady Bulldogs traveled to Douglas on Tuesday to face off against the number one team in the state during their Homecoming Week. WHS lost the C-team match in three sets, won the junior varsity match in two, and dropped the varsity match in three sets: 25-22, 25-22, 25-16.
The Bulldogs improved in score on their third meeting with the Bearcats, however they are a salty team loaded with fire power on their front line and they challenge players with their tenacious serving on every first contact. It is a tough combination to overcome. WHS committed a few too many errors of their own, which against the high caliber Bearcats, just can’t happen. For the Bulldogs, Gavrielle Dawson led with seven kills and 17 digs; Ella Keil posted 14 digs; and Camryn Mickelsen had 13 assists.
WHS hosted the Bison of Buffalo on Saturday. The C-Team lost in two sets, the Junior Varsity won in two sets and the Varsity improved to 19-5 overcoming the Bison in three sets: 25-14, 25-9, and 25-9. The Bulldogs strategized a defense that would allow them to capitalize on blocking at the pins and aggressive defense. WHS is hitting their stride with a diverse attack and versatile play by their experienced veterans.
Coach Sally Nichols stated, “Saturday was a fun match. Our gals really worked hard to adapt to changes in the line-up. We have had a lot of success this season, but we feel we have strengths that we haven’t taken advantage of. As a team we devised a line-up that would help us exploit our opponents’ weaknesses and highlight our strengths. It was great to see it all come together.”
Statistics featured G. Dawson with six kills, three blocks, and seven digs; C. Mickelsen had 18 assists; Desirae Iacovetto had five kills and two blocks; Halle Mickelsen posted eight kills; Ayden Coates had five kills; Keil had nine digs; and Bianca Dawson had six assists.
