WHS Bulldog golfers named winners, break another record

WHEATLAND – Last week the Wheatland High School golf team hosted its annual fall invite which brought Douglas, Torrington, Rawlins, Glenrock, Laramie, and Cheyenne South to town. Even though the participating teams had to deal with smoky conditions, the weather was favorable both days.
The WHS boys got off to a great start on day one and did not look back. As a team they broke their own team record from last week by six shots, finishing day one with a score of 294.
The team was led by sophomore golfers Tate Nichols and Jacob Miller who were the clubhouse leaders after firing rounds of 68 (-4) and 70 (-2), both finishing under par for the day. Five other Wheatland golfers joined Nichols and Miller in the top ten with solid rounds as well: Isaac Cdebaca was in third with a 75, Brecken Sandlian and Ace Keil were tied for fourth with rounds of 76, Dylan Nelson was in sixth after his round of 78, and Fletcher McKee was in ninth after his 83.

On the girls’ side, sophomore Haylie Nelson had a one-shot tourney lead after firing a stellar 84 and sophomore Tayen Wakkuri found herself in fifth place after shooting 97.
When the smoke cleared on day two, literally, the Bulldogs proceeded to handle their business on the course. The boys broke their two-day scoring record by shooting 305 on day two, which left them with an astounding two-day score of 594. With that kind of score, it was not surprising to see WHS golfers’ names littering the leaderboard when it was all said and done.
Nichols won his second tournament in as many weeks by shooting a two under round of 70 to finish at six under par for the tourney. Miller secured a runner-up finish by shooting 76 to end up two over after both days. Sandlian shot 80 to finish 3rd, Nelson shot 79 to finish 4th, Keil shot 82 to finish 5th, Cdebaca shot 84 to finish 6th, and McKee tied for 10th after shooting an 85.
Ironically, the two WHS girls finished in the exact same spot they did on day one. Nelson secured her first high school victory by one shot after shooting 86. Wakkuri shot 99 to finish fifth. The girls were not able to produce a team score with only two golfers.
