Cowboy Derby keeps putters hot

WHEATLAND – The third annual Cowboy Derby Golf Tournament was held on June 7th and 8th. The Cowboy Derby is a fundraiser put on by numerous volunteers and supported by many businesses in Platte County. The funds help support junior golf in our area and our Wheatland High School golf team. Over $15,000 has been earned the first two years of the event.
This year 80 competitors entered the event in two-person teams. The tournament included four teams in each flight with a guaranteed three nine-hole best ball matches. The top team from each flight qualified for the Derby, which entailed a team alternate shot single elimination on continuous holes until the final team won by lowest score on the final hole.
Wheatland High School golfers assisted by serving food, cleaning golf carts, and selling chances for prizes at holes along the course. Local business owners donated numerous prizes for the event as well as countless hours helping organize and supporting the event.
Junior Tournament

In addition, this year’s Cowboy Derby was kicked off by a junior tournament on June 6, boasting ten teams of two individuals that entered the event. Local Wheatland High School and Wheatland Middle School golf coaches assisted in putting on the event, and WHS golfers helped caddy for the junior golfers. Teams of two competed in match play of three-hole rounds.

The winners of the First Annual Youth Cowboy Derby tournament were:
1st Place: Blaze Appleton and Grant Douglas
2nd Place: Griffin Nichols and Dylan Nelson
3rd Place: Hayden Unren and Brexton Neil
