WHEATLAND – In their first home invitational of the year, the Wheatland High School Bulldogs faced some stiff competition from some of the bigger schools on the eastern side of the state.
The teams participating were: Cheyenne Central, Cheyenne East, Cheyenne South, Douglas, Laramie, Rawlins, Torrington and Wheatland. Cheyenne Central won both team titles and boasted both medalist spots with Katie Cobb and Alexander Miller.
Moving the tournament date up one day from Thursday to Wednesday made for a great finale for the spring golfers. The coaching staff along with the WHS AD Cedric Philo decided that moving the event up one day was in the best interest of all athletes due to the extreme weather coming in on Thursday.
“Our decision resulted in a great event where results were not dictated by the elements that Wyoming Spring weather usually throws a wrench in,” said head golf coach Tony Nichols. “Our coaching staff was pleased with the results as well. We had four golfers break 100 and freshman Dylan Nelson shot an 89. Nelson was followed by Brecken Sandlian (90), Maxx Meyer (95), Brock Peasley (96), Dante Dawson (106), and Wyatt Fitzwater (116). Our lone lady golfer Jazlynne Gonzalez shot a 136 to end the season.”
This was the last of the spring golf for the Bulldogs and Nichols looked ahead to the fall season where he comes back with the girl’s state champion golf team.
“The future is bright for Wheatland golf,” Nichols said. “Our ladies squad is looking to win their third consecutive conference title in Worland and second consecutive state title in Rawlins this fall. Our boys side showed a vast improvement this spring with sophomores to be Brecken Sandlian, Dylan Nelson, and Wyatt Fitzwater topping their personal best. Their commitment to golf outside of the scheduled and allotted practice time is what is going to build a foundation for years to come. Most importantly, these young men support and root for each other on the golf course. Great things are in store for Wheatland Golf Team for years to come.”
