GUERNSEY- Morrill came into town after playing some top teams in Nebraska. They didn’t anticipate little Guernsey to be that tough, but they were in for a surprise as Guernsey-Sunrise outscored them in three quarters and came away with a 41-37 victory.
“We overcame an early deficit due to a very sluggish start of the game,” said head coach Steve Zimmerman. “The effects of not having a full team for practice over break showed early in the game. I was impressed with the fortitude the team showed as the game moved to the fourth quarter.”
Morrill came out of the gates with swag and confidence and took the lead after the first quarter 12-8 and opened the game on a 9-1 run. Guernsey picked those points back up in the second quarter and the teams went into the locker room all knotted up at 21.
The third quarter gave Morrill a bit of an edge and a one-point lead going into the final stanza. The fourth quarter was a hard-fought battle, but in the end, Morrill could not stay with the shooting of Tristin Hohnholt or the rebounding of Guernsey’s twin towers, Jacob Roper and Caleb Christensen.
Hohnholt led all scorers with 16 followed by Dawson Bingham with eight, Roper with six, Aidan Noggle with six and Caleb Christensen with 5. Christensen led all rebounders with 14 and Hohnholt led the team in steals with six. Bingham led the team in assists with five in addition to hitting the clutch 3-point shot that put the Vikings ahead for good in the final minute of the game. The Vikings knocked down five three-point shots, three of which came from Hohnholt.
“There were great individual defensive stops especially when Tristan Hohnholt and Dawson Bingham were given assignments to guard Morrill’s leading scorers,” Zimmerman said. “We struggled to get a flow in our offensive sets due to Morrill's multiple defenses and us looking to put up quick shots when the offense bogged down. The bigs Jacob and Caleb actually battled players their own size. They each had great rebounding numbers but were fatigued to dominate on offense. The game was a great learning experience exposing many areas that we will focus on the next couple of weeks. Overall the confidence is growing as they have now put three wins together.”
