Traveling Volleyball Team takes First Place

WINDSOR - Earlier this month the Wheatland Volleyball Club Ascend won first place at the U14 NORCO Holiday Tourney.
Ascend is a Volleyball Club that began last spring. Associated with the Amateur Athletic Union, they had 75 girls participate from ages third to twelfth grade. The season ran from March until the middle of May. When the program was over, some of the athletes asked the coach if they could have a travel team in the fall and continue playing through the year. The group joined the Northern Colorado circuit.
“As a high school volleyball coach, I realized we needed to get them playing earlier if you want them to be successful when they get to high school,” explained Wheatland High School coach Lindsay Schaffner. “The grade-school girls that were involved last spring got a little taste and as they go into the Middle School they will gain more playing time and skills.
The Coach is really impressed at how the Basketball Leagues through Parks and Recreation really help the kids become better athletes since they get to start playing the sport much younger and create a love of the game as children.
The Club will hold another program next spring and hope to encourage more girls to get involved. For information you may contact Lindsay Schaffner at West Elementary (307) 322-4180. There will be letters with information sent home with the kids or you can go to the Facebook page: Wheatland Volleyball Club ASCEND.
