Lady Bulldogs take two in Cheyenne

CHEYENNE – With another game postponed to bad weather this spring, the Lady Bulldogs only saw action in a JV doubleheader at Cheyenne East last Monday.

“This week was quite slow for the Lady Bulldogs in regards to game play,” coach Jodie Fitzwater said. “The Bulldogs junior varsity team traveled to play the Thunderbirds JV last Monday. The first game was a true back and forth nail biter throughout the game. The Bulldogs JV ran off with the lead late in the game in a 9-7 victory.”

The Bulldogs trailed 7-5 in the top of the fifth inning when Mackenzie Lockman tripled on a 1-0 count, scoring the winning runs. The base paths were crowded in this high-scoring game where the Bulldogs JV collected 12 hits versus nine by the Thunderbirds.

Delaney Aurich, Allison Blum, Sage McGee and Tatum Struble each collected multiple hits for the Bulldogs. Aurich led the team at the plate by going 3-for-3, and Struble had an inside-the-park homerun during the fifth inning.

Struble also earned the win for the Lady Bulldogs. She surrendered seven runs on nine hits over five innings, striking out nine.

During the second game, Wheatland took the lead early and never looked back with a victory of 19-1 over the Thunderbirds. Eleni McKee was in the circle for the Bulldogs and held the Thunderbirds to one hit, one walk, and had four strikeouts during the three innings played. The Bulldogs had 14 hits during the game with Blum, Traylea Foland, McKee and Cam Mickelsen leading the team with multiple hits. In the second inning, the Bulldogs put 13 runs on the scoreboard. Blum had an in-the-park homerun and Karley Adams hit a grand slam as well in the second inning.

“We also had great defense throughout both games,” Fitzwater said. “We only had one error on the books. As a whole, the team is steadily improving their appearance on the field defensively and offensively at the plate.”

The varsity games scheduled for Friday, April 28, were canceled due to poor weather conditions and the make-up date is still to be determined.

The first week in May will be busy for both the Lady Bulldogs junior varsity and varsity teams. On Monday, May 1, the Bulldogs JV will host Cheyenne South JV at home in a one game matchup at 4 p.m. On Tuesday, April 2, the Bulldogs Varsity will travel to Cheyenne East and play a double header at 3 p.m. and 5 p.m. Finally, on Friday, May 5, the Bulldogs Varsity will host Cheyenne East at 3 p.m. and 5 p.m. On May 5, the team will also be celebrating their three seniors, Megan Biggs, Jayden McDaniel and Savanna Metz during a short ceremony.
