Lady Bulldogs drop a pair in Cheyenne

CHEYENNE – The Lady Bulldogs had their week and their work schedules shortened last week due to the heavy snow that fell last Tuesday. They did manage to play a double header at Cheyenne East last Friday.

“We saw limited in action this past week due to the recent snowstorm,” Jodie Fitzwater, Lady Bulldog head coach said. “Teams across the state have been struggling getting games in as the weather has not been cooperating with the sports programs this spring. However, the Wheatland Lady Bulldogs have been lucky and have had the most games out of any team in the state.”

At Cheyenne East, Wheatland played the Thunderbirds in a doubleheader in which the Bulldogs struggled in both games to contain the high-powered offense of the Thunderbirds with scores of 14-2 in the first game and 9-1 in the second game.

“Cheyenne East is currently ranked the top team in the East Conference as well as in the state,” Fitzwater said. “The team is stacked with very strong hitters as well as defensive players.”

In the first game, the Bulldogs were able to get good wood on the ball at times and got runners in scoring position but left many runners stranded. The Bulldogs once again presented a very strong defense with minimal errors, but East was able to get solid base hits into the gaps.

Delaney Aurich led the Bulldogs offensively by going 2-for-3 at the plate, and Camryn Mickelsen added another steal to her season total. Mackenzie Lockman started on the mound for the Bulldogs and struck out two in the first two innings. Aurich and Tatum Struble both threw an inning each to help the Bulldogs finish out the first game. During the second game against the Thunderbirds, Lockman , Karley Adams and Struble led the Lady Bulldogs by collecting one hit each. Struble was in the circle for the Bulldogs, and though she did not walk away with the win, she was able to pitch her first complete varsity game.

“Despite the recent losses, we are not deterred and are confident moving forward against future opponents,” Fitzwater said. “Both the JV and varsity teams will be in action this upcoming week as long as the fields dry up and the weather holds out.”

On Tuesday, April 11, the Bulldog JV team will travel to Laramie and play the Plainsmen JV team at 4 and 5:30 p.m. On Thursday, April 13, the Bulldog varsity team will play Cheyenne South in Torrington at 3 and 5 p.m. To finish out the week, the Bulldog varsity squad travels to Laramie and play the Plainsmen at 4 p.m. and 6 p.m.
