Bulldogs tame Herders under Friday night lights

WHEATLAND – Glenrock came out in last Friday night’s game like a freight train with a chip on their shoulder and looking like a strong candidate to upset the 16th ranked Bulldogs.
After Glenrock took a 14-6 lead in the first quarter, it looked like the Dawgs were in for a uphill battle.
Failing to control the line of scrimmage early cost Wheatland the lead as the Herders were pounding the ball on the ground and gained the upper hand in the box score.
Wheatland then made two adjustments that made them once again clamp down on their opponents. They began to dominate the line of scrimmage on defense and picked up the cross-blocking scheme that Glenrock had begun with. After the initial blows by Glenrock, they managed only two more scores in the next three quarters.
The Bulldogs then unleashed their passing game which spooked the Herder linebackers and opened secondary lanes for the running game.
Rodee Brow hauled in the first score for the Bulldogs with a long 26-yard pass play from Kade Preuit. As the secondary backed off trying to stop the speedy Wheatland receivers, a long 24-yard run from scrimmage found Devin Weber crossing the goal line to cause the Bulldogs to take the lead for the first time in the game.

With 1:33 left in the first half the Bulldogs had the ball around midfield and again, the Wheatland air force began to bomb the opponents who were already on their heels. Once again, the passing combination of Preuit to Jake Hicks seemed unstoppable, and it only took 17 seconds before Hicks caught a long pass on his fingertips, broke three tackles and bulled his way into the endzone to give the Bulldogs enough points to seal the fate of the Glenrock Herders.
Second half domination continued and the Bulldogs came away with a 48 to 26 win. The Bulldogs will enjoy the friendly confines of home again this week as Burns comes to town for a 7 p.m. game Friday night.
