Wheatland school choirs make joyful noise

WHEATLAND — Members of the Wheatland Middle and High schools’ choirs entertained a full house on Tuesday at the annual Winter Choir Concert, under the direction of music instructor Chris Leathers, and piano accompaniment by Shelley Marker. Middle school choir, Middle School Combined Choir, Concert Choir, Treble Choir, and Entertainers all performed both traditional and non-traditional holiday music.

The first group to perform, “1st Period Middle School Choir”, though small, performed big and ended with a cheerful and up-beat number, “All That Holiday Stuff!”

The Combined Middle School Choir performed a Brazilian medley in folk-acapella style, along with a fun arrangement of “Last Christmas,” originally performed by ‘80s pop band WHAM!/George Michael. Soloists for this choir were Bree Hattan, Mya Collins, Brylee Gamber, Millisa Murray, Hannah James, Emilio Jenkins, Kaven Karr, Steven Reece, and Sawyer Adams.

The Concert Choir (the Ugly Sweater Brigade) charmed the audience with whimsical holiday-themed sweaters as they performed three holiday pieces with humor and nice tenor and bass contributions from the boys.

The Treble Choir, an all-girls combo, performed two holiday pieces and finished with a sweet arrangement of “Merry Christmas, Darling.”

The Entertainers, in their formal dresses and ties-and-waistcoats, performed three moving holiday pieces which included “The Road Home,” “Once Upon a December,” and the almost haunting “Let the River Run.”

Finally, all members of all choirs appeared from behind the curtains, surrounded the audience and bid holiday cheer with the classic “Welcome Christmas” from the original “How the Grinch Stole Christmas” soundtrack. Instructor Chris Leathers joined his students in singing the final piece.
