WHEATLAND—Lacy Mansfield has been a practicing midwife for the past 4 years; Last year, she attended 24 births. Her birthing clinic, Sacred Birth, is moving from Guernsey to a new location in Wheatland.
Lacy worked as an EMT in Montana for 9 years. She lived in a rural town, 90 miles away from the nearest hospital. She saw many women in labor rushed to a far-flung hospital; a stressful endeavor for mother and baby, often for a low-risk birth. Inevitably, Lacy assisted in several deliveries en route.
When Lacy was expecting her 4th child, she decided to use a midwife for the first time and “noticed a difference with the personal care… the personable interaction was appealing to me.” She subsequently attended the National College of Midwifery. She enjoys “helping out women with more informed decision making.” When asked if demand for home births has increased, Lacy explained that interest “is about the same,” although she did see an increase during the COVID-19 pandemic; expectant mothers voiced concerns about having a newborn in the hospital.
Sacred Birth oversees home births and births in their clinic. Certified Professional Midwives are required to meet continuing education requirements to obtain licensure in the State of Wyoming. They also require CPR and NRP (Neonatal Resuscitation Program) for mothers and babies. Lacy joined the Wyoming Midwifery Board in 2020 and was elected Vice Chair this year. Her service sees mothers through pregnancy, birth and up to 6 weeks of postpartum care.
For those interested in obtaining Sacred Birth’s services, Lacy says to contact her “the sooner, the better” (as her calendar is limited). Sacred Birth can be contacted at lacy@sacredbirthmtwy.com or at (307) 331-7430.
