Wheatland High School Track and Field Invitational hosts large field of competitors

Posted

WHEATLAND – The weather for the April 1 track meet at Wheatland was as if Mother Nature was pranking all in attendance with snow and cold temperatures.

Most of the busses began pulling up at 9 a.m. to below freezing temperatures and most of the teams came off the busses with heavy jackets, hats, gloves and blankets. Although jackets began to come off somewhere around 3 p.m., the wind kicked up and it was back to bundling up.

There were 18 teams represented at the track meet, some unexpected, coming over from the Upton meet which was canceled. All four Platte County Schools were represented including Glendo, Chugwater, Guernsey-Sunrise and Wheatland.

Of the Platte County schools, Wheatland boys finished fourth in the team competition and the girls finished in sixth place while Guernsey-Sunrise boys finished 13th.

“Mother nature decided to give us quite the variety of weather on Friday,” said head track coach Matt Hazen. “We had light rain, sleet, snow, cold, and hot during the meet. But even with the changing and adverse conditions, the athletes performed well.

“The girls 4 x 100 team ran fast enough to prequalify for the state contest and so did Rodee Brow in the 400 meter dash. Rodee Brow and Jake Hicks had another exciting pole vault competition. Jake tied Rodee’s school record with a vault of 14 feet, but Rodee managed to soar over 14’ – 6” in the jump off attempt to break the tie for first place in the competition between Jake and Rodee. Rodee’s final vault set a new school record for a second time this season. There were many athletes that set new personal records for themselves throughout the meet as well. Desirae Iacovetto is one of those standouts for this meet, she managed to get under 13 seconds in the 100 meter dash and is continuing to improve as we get further into the season.”
