Five-Year Review for Former F.E. Warren Air
Force Base, Atlas “E” Missile
Air Force Base Atlas “F” Site 5

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) will be conducting a Five-Year Review at the Former F.E. Warren Atlas “E” Missile Site 5, to be completed in 2020.  The Five-Year Review is a regular checkup on the Formerly Used Defense Site (FUDS) to ensure that cleanup decisions continue to protect people and the environment. It will also review the status if the cleanup and the laws that apply to the cleanup.

Site 5 is located approximately 6 miles south of Chugwater, Wyoming and was one of nine Atlas “E” missile sites operated by the Air Force under the 549th Strategic Missile Squadron at F.E. Warren Air Force Base, Cheyenne Wyoming. The missile site facility was operational from 1960 to 1965 and the original site consisted of 258 acres. The property was transferred to private ownership in 1967.  Investigations identified the main contaminant of concern to be trichloroethene (TCE) in shallow ground water. The selected remedy for this site is enhanced reductive dechlorination (ERD). ERD was selected from several alternatives as the most effective method for addressing TCE, a chlorinated solvent, and its associated degradation products present or potentially present in the shallow groundwater aquifer at Site 5. The selected groundwater remedy addresses this risk by reducing groundwater contamination below the federal maximum contaminant levels established for TCE and associated degradation products.
