WHEATLAND – A familiar face around Wheatland, whether she is taking someone’s temperature, raising funds for Wheatland High School athletics, cheering loudly in the stands for her kids, volunteering to help at the local track meets or chancing an icy road to a distant location to livestream games for the fans back home.

Khery Otero has touched the heart of her community with her service and her compassion and has been recognized by the international DAISY Foundation and awarded The DAISY Award.

According to the DAISY Foundation’s website, “In creating The DAISY Award, there were three elements we wanted to ensure our recognition program included:

  1. A partnership with healthcare organizations to provide on-going recognition of the clinical skill and especially the compassion nurses provide to patients and families all year long.
  2. Guided implementation and on-going support where DAISY provides most of the materials for the program.
  3. Flexibility so that The DAISY Award may be tailored to each hospital’s unique culture and values.”

The award was presented by Banner Health CEO Merry-Ann Keane.

According to their posting, “Platte County Memorial Hospital was proud to present Khery Otero with the DAISY award, an international award of the DAISY Foundation. She received a very touching patient nomination:

‘It is with great pleasure that I nominate Khery Otero for the DAISY award. Khery provides exceptional support to her patients. She is empathetic to her patients and treats them with dignity and respect. I recently had numerous ER visits. I was very skeptical to stay, but she was wonderful in helping me decide to stay as I was scared as I just lost my father the week before to the same sickness. I put my trust in her and she is very knowledgeable, and her caring is amazing. When I got admitted on the last trip to the ER she made a point to come and check on me in my room. She went out of her way to make sure I was doing okay. Every time I see Khery with her patients you can tell she cares for her patients and goes above and beyond for them. With her kindness, compassion and guidance I was able to get the care I needed.’ Thank you Khery for your dedication to your patients and your profession!’”

Otero who is never wanting to be in the limelight was humbled by the award.

“I was very honored to be nominated and chosen for The Daisy Award,” Otero said. “It is very humbling to join some of my peers who have been given this award. Nurses who have mentored me and guided me, those I have looked up to my whole career. I have spent my nursing career trying to make a difference in people’s lives, to be the best part of their worst day. I try to encourage people to be healthy, and to strive for health and wellness in all aspects of their lives.”

Otero a class act, Platte County lucky to have her.
