WHEATLAND – The Wheatland eighth grade girls basketball teams squared off against Douglas last week. The B team had the first slot and won with a final score of 34-13. The A Team also won 39-16.
Jessie Graves started the scoring with a hoop in the first few minutes of the game. At the end of the first half, Wheatland was already leading at 16-6. Megan Cecil was the first to score at the beginning of the second half. Kaylee Henthorn sunk the next basket for the Bulldogs in quick succession.

The Douglas team tried to keep up, but only managed to stay the same distance down with the score at 22-10 at the end of the third quarter.
Graves once again scored first in the last quarter of the game. Bryley Waring had an impressive shot with just net and Cecil garnered a lay-up.
Spirits were high going into the A game after the B team’s commanding win. The first score on the board went to Anna Matthews with a free throw. The Douglas team was high on fouls, committing nine fouls in the course of the game.
The Bulldogs quickly grabbed the lead at 5-0. Douglas did not get on the board until halfway through the first quarter. The end of the first quarter was 5-4, Wheatland ahead.
Kacey Otero was the first to score in the second quarter and when she was fouled, captured the free throw shot. Macy Jones made an impressive shot and made the basket while being fouled by Douglas. She made the free-throw as well. With just 21 seconds left in the first half, Matthews made another basket making the half score 18-10, Bulldogs still leading.
At the beginning of the second half, Matthews scored twice in a row while the Bearcats failed to score for the entire third quarter.
Douglas did manage to get a basket early in the fourth quarter and a few following, but it was not enough to come even close to catching the Bulldogs. Otero made a three-pointer with less than one minute left in the game. It was the last hoop and made the final score 39-16.
They will face Johnson Junior High on Thursday at 4 p.m. at the Wheatland High School gym.
