GOSHEN COUNTY – A criminal warrant for a Torrington man, Andrew Atkinson (26), was issued by the Eight Judicial District Circuit Court of Goshen County late Monday, August 12. Atkinson is currently wanted for two counts of aggravated assault and battery, one count of strangulation of a household member and one count child abuse, according to court records obtained Tuesday morning.

According to the affidavit of probable cause filed on Monday, Sherriff Kory Fleenor with the Goshen County Sheriff’s Office received a call from a social worker regarding a potential domestic violence victim on Sunday, August 4 at approximately 9:29 a.m. Records indicate the incident took place on Saturday, August 3, between Atkinson and the mother of his child, Jane Doe. Both Doe and her minor child were transported to Banner Health Emergency Room in Wheatland. Doe was later transferred to a higher level of care at Cheyenne Regional West Medical Center, the affidavit explained.

The affidavit explains Doe, the minor child and Atkinson were attending a party in Lingle and at approximately 8 p.m. they left the residence. The vehicle was seen at a local business where Atkinson parked for a “brief period at which time he stated to have a verbal argument with Doe,” the affidavit explains.

Atkinson “yanked her (Doe) around” on the east side of the business, pulling her hair, according to the affidavit.

“A short time after leaving the business Atkinson again pulled the vehicle over into a field access point in the 2700 block of [Wyoming] State Highway 157. Atkinson started to punch Doe in the face multiple times with a closed fist(s) and hit her in the head with a Glock Gen 5 9mm handgun causing her to lose consciousness. Atkinson further placed his hand(s) around her neck and strangled her for approximately ten seconds causing her to lose consciousness for a second time,” the affidavit explained. “When Doe regained consciousness, she picked up [minor child] exited the vehicle and attempted to run away towards a barn (north). At that time, Doe was scared that Atkinson was, ‘going to kill her.’”

The affidavit states Doe tripped multiple times while trying to escape Atkinson which allowed him to catch up with her.

“Atkinson then took [minor child] from Doe and started to walk back to the parked vehicle. Doe ran towards Atkinson at which time he allowed her (Doe) to again hold [minor child]. Doe walked back to the vehicle again and entered the back seat with Atkinson driving.”

According to the affidavit, Atkinson then drove Doe and the minor child to the 7800 block of Road 27 where he again stopped the vehicle.

“Atkinson then started to punch and kick Doe in the face and chest area as she was on the ground. Atkinson later got into the vehicle and left southbound on Road 27,” the affidavit reads.

After laying on the ground for a period of time while Atkinson drove away, Doe got up and ran to a cornfield with the minor child to evade the attack, according to the affidavit.

“Due to the incident, Jane Doe sustained a puncture/collapsed lung as well as bruising and lacerations to her entire body to include her feet. Doe had two black eyes that were almost swollen closed. Doe’s face was also bruised with hematomas that caused her face to appear disfigured,” the affidavit reads. “Doe received 15 staples and four sutures in her head due to being stuck by the firearm and fists of Atkinson. A chest tube was also placed in her lung due to being forcible struck and kicked in the chest by Atkinson.”

The minor child was treated for lacerations to her forehead and head, according to the affidavit. The minor child received treatment for the injuries at Cheyenne Regional Medical Center Forensic Nursing Staff, the affidavit confirms.

“Count one: On or about August 8, 2024, Andrew Atkinson, did attempt to cause, or intentionally or knowingly cause bodily injury to another with a deadly weapon, to wit: Andrew Atkinson did intentionally or knowingly cause bodily injury to Jane Doe after pulling over at the 2700 block of [Wyoming] State Highway 157 in Goshen County and punching Doe in the face multiple times with a closed fist and hitting her in the head with a Glock Gen 5 9mm handgun,” the information statement Monday read.

Atkinson is charged with two counts of aggravated assault and battery with a maximum penalty of ten year’s imprisonment, a fine of not more than $10,000, or both. He is charged with strangulation of a household member with a maximum penalty of imprisonment of not more than ten years and/or a $10,000 fine or both. Atkinson is also charged with one count of felony child abuse with a maximum penalty of ten years imprisonment and/or a $10,000 fine.

“And prayed that Andrew Atkinson might be arrested and dealt with according to the law; and whereas it appears a warrant is appropriate and just to secure the defendant’s appearance before this court,” the criminal warrant issued by the Eighth Judicial District in and for Goshen County, Wyoming reads.

It should be noted, there was a 2016 warrant for the arrest of Atkinson for applying pressure on the throat or neck and burglary.
