WHEATLAND — The Wyoming Department of Transportation held its annual informational meeting with the Platte County Commission during the commission’s regular meeting July 3 to discuss upcoming State Transportation Improvement Program projects over the next six years.
WYDOT Chief Engineer Gregg Fredrick and WYDOT District 2 Engineer Lowell Fleenor presented the STIP.
Fredrick said WYDOT wants more robust public involvement in the STIP planning process. He stressed the importance of federal, state, county and city governments working together in order to create a seamless road system. He said WYDOT considers about eight to 10 projects per month and expects to complete about 100 projects in 2018.
Fredrick said WYDOT’s fiscal year 2018 budget was over $581 million. He said half WYDOT’s budget is federal revenue, and state dedicated highway user fees account for about 35 percent of the budget. He said most road projects in Wyoming are federal projects, which require a state funding match of 10 percent.
Fleenor summarized WYDOT projects planned in Platte County through fiscal year 2024, starting with Interstate 25 reconstruction between mile posts 97.5-100.82, the Cassa Road interchange. Fleenor said WYDOT anticipates finishing the northbound lanes this year, but not the southbound lanes.
Fleenor said other 2018 projects are rock scaling along the I-25 Chugwater marginal and microsurfacing I-25 between mile posts 58.4-68.97. Rock scaling entails removing loose rocks and boulders from rock faces along the road before they become hazards falling into the road. Fleenor explained microsurfacing is a slurry seal as opposed to chip seal pavement preservation activity. He said WYDOT is doing more microsurfacing throughout the state.
“It’s a little pricier than chip seal, but it’s more durable and it can address some rutting,” Fleenor said.
For 2019, WYDOT plans to replace Sybille Creek bridge, chip seal Antelope Gap Road (WYO 316) between mile posts .1-11.91 and line a culvert under I-25 at mile post 85.7.
