WHS boys falter in two

GERING, Neb. – The Wheatland boys basketball team traveled to Gering, Neb., Friday to face their namesake Bulldogs in a rematch of an earlier December game. Wheatland came out aggressively and scored the first nine points to take a 9-2 lead at the end of the first quarter.  The Wheatland Bulldogs went cold in the second quarter and only put up two points for the entire period and trailed 23-11. Wheatland continued their offensive struggles in the second half and eventually fell 58-33. 

Bright spots for the Wheatland boys included Jamison Brown and Luke Anderson who each had personal season-high games with 10 points apiece. The duo also combined for three rebounds and three assists.

On top of his three points, Trigg Peasley finished with 10 rebounds and an assist in the loss.

Several Bulldogs got in on the scoring, with 10 Wheatland players putting in at least one point. Trevor Vaughn hit one of the team’s four three-pointers on his way to three points, a rebound and an assist. Kobey Preuit chipped in three points, a boards and an assist.

On Saturday, Wheatland encountered 3A’s hottest team, the Wyopreps No.5-ranked Newcastle Doggies. Newcastle leads the state at 67 points per game and boasts three of the top individual scorers in the east. Wheatland continued its offensive drought and shot 6-for-32 from three-point range.

Wheatland went to halftime down 10 and were able to close the game to within seven in the third period. Bug again, struggled down the stretch to fall 54-36.

Zac Gunter led the Bulldogs with 12 points, including six from behind the arc, while accounting for four boards, three assists anda  team-high five steals.

Vaughn poured in seven points, while Anderson and Peasely combined for 11 points in the loss. The trio combined for five assists, 10 boards and two steals. Peasely and Vaughn tied for the team-lead on the glass, hauling in five rebounds apiece.

Brown, Mytch Pollock and Clayton Iacovetto rounded out the scoring with two points apiece.

After starting the season 3-1, the Bulldogs have lost seven straight. The Bulldogs have the state’s leading defense but are scoring a conference-low 38 points per game. Wheatland hopes to find offensive answers this weekend when they host the Torrington Trailblazers Friday and Alliance, Neb., Bulldogs Saturday.
