The Gering, Neb., girls basketball team sprinted out to a 15-1 lead in the opening 3:44 Monday evening to cruise to a 65-34 victory over the Wheatland Bulldogs and the Gering boys held the Bulldogs to 23 total points en route to a 47-23 victory as the visiting Bulldogs completed a varsity sweep in Wheatland’s home opener.

WHEATLAND – The Gering, Neb., girls basketball team sprinted out to a 15-1 lead in the opening 3:44 Monday evening to cruise to a 65-34 victory over the Wheatland Bulldogs and the Gering boys held the Bulldogs to 23 total points en route to a 47-23 victory as the visiting Bulldogs completed a varsity sweep in Wheatland’s home opener. 

In girls action, Gering jumped out to a 10-0 lead in the first 2:10 of the contest and eventually led 22-4 in the first quarter before grabbing a 24-8 lead at the end of the first eight minutes. 

Wheatland battled back in the second, cutting the Gering lead to eight (29-21) on a Danielle Brow field goal with 4:16 remaining in the first half. Gering responded with a 9-3 run to close out the half with a 38-24 lead. 

The visiting Bulldogs continued to apply the pressure in the third, and outscored Wheatland 15-6 to extend out to a 23-point advantage (53-30) at the end of the third. 

Brow led Wheatland with 13 points, while Khayla Otero, Loren Mann and Destiny Cook added six points apiece. Danielle Britz added two points and Kaesha Davis and Miranda Hanks added a point apiece. 

Gering’s Kelly Snelling led all scorers with 20 points and was one of three Bulldogs scoring in double figures. Arianna Mitchell added 14 points and Oliva Schaub added 10, while Makenzie Dunkel had eight points and Paige Lopez added seven. 

In boys action, both teams struggled offensively out of the gates, as Gering took a 4-3 lead at the end of the first period. 

Gering’s offense found its stride in the second and outscored Wheatland 15-9 to take a 19-12 lead at intermission. Wheatland’s nine second-quarter points would be their highest scoring quarter of the night. 

Gering opened the third period with four straight three-pointers to extend out to a 31-14 lead and never looked back. 

Wheatland ended the night with 16 turnovers and 9-of-33 from the field. 

Trigg Peasley led Wheatland with seven points, while Luke Anderson had five and Cole Adams chipped in four. Clayton Iacovetto added three points and Kobey Pruitt and Jamison Brown had two points apiece. 

Xavier Horst led Gering with 16 points, while Jake Rocheleau had 12. Emanuel Campos added six points, Tyler Pszanka and Riley Schliz had five points apiece and Tommy Ganos had three.
