DOUGLAS – The Wheatland boys basketball team traveled to Douglas Friday and Saturday for the 3A east vs. west tournament.

The west teams, Riverton, Cody, Lovell and Lander had the upper hand all weekend, going 9-2 against the east including Douglas, Wheatland, Torrington and Thermopolis.

The Bulldogs faced three ranked teams in two days.

On Friday, Wheatland faced the No-4 ranked (Wyopreps.com Coaches and Media Poll) Lovell Bulldogs.  Wheatland fell behind early and, after spotting Lovell the first nine points of the game, trailed 27-22 at halftime.

The Bulldogs offense struggled, shooting 2-for-20 from three-point range and only put up six points in the second half, falling 44-28.

Jamison Brown and Kobey Preuit each grabbed five rebounds in the loss.

In Saturday’s opener, the Bulldogs faced defending 3A state champion and current No-3 ranked Riverton. Wheatland again fall behind and struggled to overcome an early deficit, down 28-15 at the half.

The Bulldogs played Riverton even in the second half and closed to within nine points.  The Wolverines pulled away late and finish with a 57-39 victory.

Trigg Peasley finished with 12 points, five rebounds and Preuit added seven points.  In the afternoon game, the Bulldogs matched up against the No. 2-ranked Cody Broncs.

Wheatland again had a slow start and faced a 15-point deficit at the end of the first quarter. Preuit was the lone bright spot in the first half, scoring eight of Wheatland’s first half total of 10 points.  Wheatland entered halftime down 37-10.

For the first time all weekend, the Bulldog offense got going in the second half.

Peasley went 5-for-6 from three-point range and put up all of his team-leading 17 points in the second half to go along with 10 rebounds.

Preuit finished with eight points. Adams ended with six points and four rebounds.  Wheatland outscored Cody 29-20 in the second half but fell, 57-39.

Wheatland hopes to build off of several competitive quarters against ranked opponents this weekend and put together a complete game following the two-week Christmas break.  The Bulldogs will face the Douglas Bearcats Saturday, January 6, 2018 to start conference play.
