CASPER – The Guernsey-Sunrise High School track and field team wrapped up the season last weekend at the Class 1A State Track and Field Championships in Casper.

The Viking boys’ team placed 13th with 21 points, while the Lady Vikings placed 14th with five points.

“The kids had a great weekend at state,” head coach Troy Reichert said. “We knew coming in that points would be tough to get, so we put an emphasis on setting PRs and letting the chips fall where they may. Fifteen of our 20 athletes PR'd at state, and the kids should be very proud of how they ended their season".

Caleb Christensen led the way for the Viking boys, placing in both shot put and discus.

He finished second in shot put with a throw of 44 feet, 4 inches and third in discus with a toss of 137-9.

Jacob Roper placed seventh in discus at 113-3.

"Our goal was for the throwers to finish at the place they went in at or to move up in the competition,” throwers coach Jeanette Christensen said. “Although that didn't happen with all three throwers, I am so proud of how these kids performed and progressed throughout the season.”

The Guernsey boys also had two relay teams score points.

The 4x100 team of Conner Bristow, Korbin Weinkauf, Taylor Sterner and Kolten Weinkauf placed eighth in 49.62 seconds, while the 4x400 team of Sterner, Bristow, Domonic Ramirez and Aiden Noggle placed sixth in 3 minutes, 56.82 seconds.

"The kids worked hard and proved to themselves at state that hard work and a good attitude all season long pays off in the end,” hurdles and relay coach Laura Burfeind said.

Kolten Weinkauf also finished seventh in the 400-meter dash in 54.92 seconds.

In the girls’ division, Juliana Schiele led the Lady Vikings with a fifth-place finish in pole vault.

She cleared 8 feet to tie her personal record.

The girls’ 4x100 team of Liberty Whitebird, Lashea Dimaas, Schiele and Rylie Thompson came home eighth in 58.86 seconds.

"I'm especially happy for our 3 seniors that competed Caleb Christensen came home with two medals and earned all-state in the shot put, while Jacob Roper earned a seventh-place medal in the discus. Kolten Weinkauf ran a kid down as our anchor in the 4x1 to bring home an eighth-place medal, and he cut his open 400 time from :58 last week to :54 in the prelims at state to earn an eighth-place medal,” Reichert said. “I'm very grateful for the coaches this year and everything they did. Coaches Gunderson, Burfeind, Falon, Christensen and Weiss helped guide these kids to success the track program hasn't seen in a number of years. With 17 of the 20 state qualifiers returning next year, there's a lot for them to build on going into next year.”
