Viking boys seventh, girls eighth in Morrill

MORRILL, Neb. – The Guernsey-Sunrise Vikings girls and boys track teams combined to place in eight events at the Morrill Early Bird Invite on Saturday in Morrill.

Bailey Martin had a stellar day in the throwing events, picking up a first-place finish in the shot put with a throw of 35 feet, 5 inches and securing first in the discus with a throw of 99 feet, 10 inches.

Joining Martin in the throwing events, Macy Mote took 11th in the discus (76 feet, 8 inches) and 13th in the shot put (27 feet, 2 inches). Kassidy Morales finished 20th in the shot put with a 23-foot effort, while Katrina Christensen’s throw of 66 feet, 8 inches in the discus earned her 19th.

Also on the girls’ side, Whitney Martin placed in placed in the 200-meter dash, taking third with a time of 28.58. Christensen joined Martin on the track, finishing 25th in the 100, clocking a time of 18.22 seconds.

Three Lady Vikings competed in the long jump. Whitney Martin paced Guernsey-Sunrise in the event, finishing 15th after clearing 11 feet, 8 inches. Shaylee Niles had a jump of 10 feet to take 23rd, with Morales not far behind, taking 24th with a mark of 9 feet, 9.5 inches.

In the boys action, Roy Mote placed in two field events. He finished third in the triple jump with a 36-foot, 5.5-inch effort, while also taking fourth in the shot put with a throw of 39 feet, 4.25 inches.

Tate Stoneking joined Mote in the triple jump, clearing 33 feet, 6.5 inches to secure fifth. He also had a jump of 16 feet, 3 inches in the triple jump to take 11th. Justin Malcolm competed in the high jump, clearing 5 feet, 2 inches to take fifth. He also had a throw of 83 feet, 4 inches in the discus, sliding into the 17th-feet.

Austin Albrecht finished second in the 400, turning in a time of 55.63 seconds. He also posted times good enough for fourth in the 100 (12.41 seconds) and fifth in the 200 (24.85), but he did not compete in either finals event. Mote rounded out the track competitors, finishing 11th in the 100, clocking a time of 12.75 seconds.

The Viking boys finished the day with 22 team points to finish seventh. Mitchell took the top spot with 134 points. Bridgeport, Neb., with 111.5 points, and Bayard, Neb., with 70 points, rounded out the top-three teams.

The Guernsey-Sunrise girls tallied up 26 team points to finish eighth in the team race, just behind Sioux County, Neb. (32). Mitchell snagged first in the team race with 141 points, while Lusk (82) and Bridgeport (75), joined the Lady Tigers in the top-three.
