FORT COLLINS, Colo. — The University of Wyoming men’s rodeo team put together its strongest performance of the season in taking second place at the Colorado State University rodeo in Fort Collins on April 6-8.
The Pokes tallied 540 points to finish as the runners-up to Sheridan College, which scored a whopping 705 points to reclaim the overall Central Rocky Mountain Region lead. The Cowboys are sixth in the current standings with just two remaining rodeos left on the spring docket.
Meanwhile, on the women’s side, the Cowgirls lost ground for the second straight rodeo in the chase for the elusive No. 2 spot in the CRMR standings.
The Pokes racked up a good chunk of their points in team roping, with three team members getting in on the action. JC Flake and roping partner Jon Peterson, from Gillette College, roped their way to third in the average. One place back was Peterson and teammate Jhett Hadley, from Wheatland. Even though Casey Sellers, from Buffalo, and partner Colton Reed, from EWC, didn’t place in the average, the UW roper managed to add points to the team’s total by advancing to the short go.
The next action starts Friday at the annual Ropin’ and Riggin’ Days, hosted by Casper College. The season ends the following weekend with UW’s own home rodeo, the Laramie River Rendezvous Rodeo.
