WHEATLAND – For the 18th year, local students earned scholarships in the name of Tony Montoya’s son, Ty Montoya. The scholarships are driven by a 4-person Memorial Golf Tournament that takes place in July each year.
The tournament is supported by local business’s, friends and family.
“We have a scholarship committee who go through the applications,” said Tony Montoya.
This year, the “The Ty” will be held July 9 at the Wheatland Golf Course. Traditionally the tournament hosts 22-24 teams and the day-long activity is filled with fun and frivolity.
“I have my friend from Cheyenne who plays his acoustic guitar and sings songs on the No. 5
Tee box,” Montoya said. “I also have a crew of loud and rowdy women on the No. 7 tee box who
harass the golfers as they tee off to try to throw off their concentration. It’s a great atmosphere and the tournament is very popular and usually fills up with teams from the previous year. I have a few teams that have been there since our inception.”
