Teenagers volunteer in the community

WHEATLAND - The last day of school before the Christmas holidays used to be a day where not much happened. But for the last three years the Wheatland High School has made the day one of significant importance - The Day of Service.
Students are given a choice of of several different community service options to do in the morning. There are two different sessions of and hour and 30 minutes each so they may try different options.
There was Christmas Caroling at area businesses, deep cleaning at the 4-H Building, packing food baskets for the Lions Club at the Chamber, construction help at the Mini Golf Course being built at the park, decorating cookies to be handed out, writing letters to members of the military, and more.

“It’s an opportunity for our staff to lead our students in giving back to the community, explained High School Principal Josh Sandlian. “We want to teach our kids how important it is to support our community now and in the future. It’s not just about textbooks and finals.”
Peyton Call was out bright and early helping with the mini golf course construction by shoveling and leveling rocks and getting in some required community service hours for the FFA program at the same time.
“I like helping my community and I don’t mind getting my hands dirty,” said Call. “I just like working.”
Organizations or businesses who would like to request help on the Day of Service next year should contact Susie Schomburg at the High School, (307) 322-2075. The school is always interested in having more options for the kids to go out and help.
