WHEATLAND — The starting date for Wheatland Middle School’s STEAM (acronym for Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Math) Academy summer camp program is nearing.
It will be a free, drop-in summer program for any outgoing students from 1st through 8th grade who are in Platte County School District No. 1. STEAM Academy is also happy to accept homeschooled students in the area as well. Since the Academy is grant-funded, they are unable to accept students in other school districts.

The summer camp will begin on Monday, June 26 and last through August 4. It will be open from 11:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., Monday through Friday, and will be held at the Middle School.
Some of the activities students will be involved in include several astronomy activities, basic cooking and baking, children’s book-making, stop-motion animation, and agriculture. Students will be split into different age groups — 1st through 3rd grade will be in one group, and 4th through 8th will be in another.
Each age group will have two teachers, and they will trade off, so they have an opportunity to work with all students.
Students may also participate in a Reader’s Theatre drama unit. The Academy is planning on holding a play near the end of the summer. Since it’s a drop-in Academy, students will not be required to memorize lines for the play, but will have scripts in front of them, to better help them with their literacy skills.
The STEAM Academy is also planning two fieldtrips over the summer — to the Nature and Science Museum in Denver, CO, as well as to the University of Wyoming’s Planetarium. Fieldtrip dates are not yet finalized.
There will be a Parent’s Night, where students’ parents are welcome. This is used as an opportunity for students to show off some of the activities and projects they’ve been working on throughout the summer. Parent’s Night has not yet been officially scheduled.
Applications are not required for those already registered in Platte County School District No. 1.
