Special Olympics Torch comes through Wheatland

WHEATLAND – The cold, drizzly weather did not deter members of law enforcement, volunteers and athletes from joining together to run the Special Olympics “Flame of Hope” torch through the center of town last Wednesday. The torch run began April 25 in Cody and will travel to Laramie in time for the State Special Olympic Games opening ceremony on Thursday, May 9.
The Summer Special Olympics will include: aquatics, athletics, basketball and power lifting. The games will run May 9 though 11 in Laramie.

Wheatland’s special olympians include: Eli Jaren, Monika Ockinga, Cherokee Huston, Miranda Ockinga, Kaitlyn Huston and Jordan McClain. They have not had a coach for the last couple of years and so are not competing this year. But thanks to Officer Brad Otte stepping up to the coaching plate, they will hopefully be able to attend next year.
