Pony Express gets the mail through in Platte, Goshen counties

GUERNSEY – There wasn’t any rain, sleet or snow the postal service has always promised to overcome, but that was welcome news to the riders from the Southeast Wyoming Pony Express Association who were delivering holiday mail the old-fashioned way this past Saturday.

Under a sunny sky with just a slight breeze, riders loaded up 15 horses with nearly 2,000 pieces of holiday mail and carried them across a section of the original Pony Express route between Fort Laramie and Guernsey, Wyoming in the group’s annual Christmas Card Ride.  Included were cards addressed to 46 different states, four countries, four overseas military personnel and this year, even Santa Claus will get a specially marked letter this year.

Riders included Tony, Stephanie, Alicia and Adahline Goulart, Curt Artery, Angie Montgomery, Tim and Elana Heer, and Dennis Foster, all from the SEWPEA and Casper Pony Express riders Randy Thoroughman, Deidra Homann and Danielle Reilly.

Ground support for covering gates, driving vehicles and all the extras were handled by Scott Montgomery, Pam Joern, and Ron and Maria Moniz.

The Southeast Wyoming Pony Express Association is one of several associations in Wyoming and participates in the National Pony Express Association events year-round.  The NPEA was founded in 1978 to keep the history of the original Pony Express alive for future generations.  Each summer, the NPEA conducts a re-enactment ride between St. Joseph, Mo., and Sacramento, Calif.  The original trail, covering 1,966 miles, went from Missouri to Kansas, Nebraska, Colorado, Wyoming, Utah, Nevada and California.
