WHEATLAND – It sounded like a war zone at the Platte County Fair Grounds Exhibit Hall last weekend as 30 kids from all over Platte County participated in the air rifle and air pistol county shoot.

Air rifle competitors shot from 4 different positions including prone, sitting, kneeling and standing. Air pistol was all from the standing position.

“We had increased recruit and nearly 100 retention this year of all the shooters,” Jared Souza said. “With overall scores going up 25% across the board. These kids will move onto the .22 discipline and some will go on to shoot at state this summer. Our kids moving into .22 discipline don’t have any facilities to shoot at, the Platte County Shooting Association (rifle range) has not allowed 4H competitive shooting at the range for several years so we are looking for a place to go.”
