PLATTE COUNTY — According to an update from Platte County’s Facebook page, the tornado warning sirens were not set off before the storm on June 12 as a result of an equipment failure.
It was explained that Platte County Emergency Management sent out a CodeRed notification to residents about the tornado watch alert issued by the National Weather Service at 1:15 p.m.
Protocol calls for the sirens to be set off when a tornado warning is issued. When the NWS issued the warning at 3:30 p.m., the sirens did not go off when initiated.
The post read, “When we set off the sirens, nothing happened. It was an equipment failure. Both the computer-controlled trigger and the manual trigger failed to work. The sirens were tested on April 12 and functioned properly. We are fully engaged in discovering what went wrong this time.”
