WHEATLAND – Wheatland Kiwanis Club hosted the first-of-its-kind Discovery Day event at the Platte County Fire Dept. Training Center in May.
The event was a way to allow children in Platte County to explore a variety of trucks and other emergency vehicles, including ambulances, tractors, police cruisers and may others. The large equipment was brought in by Laramie
River Station.
“It’s a great opportunity for the kids in Platte County,” said Phathom Holt, project chair. “It’s good outreach for the businesses to get the connection with their customers face-to-face. Public safety services can get out their message too.”
A total of 367 people attended the event, Holt said. Donations collected would go to a scholarship fund.

History Day winners bound for D.C.
WHEATLAND – Two teams under the guidance of Mary Jo Birt, social studies teacher at Wheatland Middle School, won first and second place at State History Day, earning them the right to represent Wyoming at the National History Day competition in Washington, D.C., in June.
Seventh graders Jake Hicks, son of Martin and Tanda Hicks, and Rodee Brow, sone of Clay and Shannon Brow, captured first place at the district competition and second at the state level with their project, entitled “The Risk They Took.” The students investigated what happened when Japanese men interned at relocation camps following the bombing of Pearl Harbor were drafted to service in the American armed forces.
The second team of seventh graders Haiden Wiggins, daughter of Doug and Heather Wiggins, and Khayla Otero, daughter of Eric and Khery Otero, took first place honors at both district and state levels. Their project was titled “The unwanted, Unwelcomed and Unwarranted Take a Stand,” telling the story of young black girls during the Civil Rights Movement of the 1960s.

May receives ESGR Patriot award
WHEATLAND – On May 12, Wyoming Employer Support of the Guard and Reserve Ombudsman Kathy Wright presented a Patriot Award to Robin May at the Platte County Memorial Hospital.
May is the IT Customer Relations Senior Manager for the hospital, operated by Banner Health in Wheatland. Sgt. 1st Class Alan Snook from the 213 Regional Training Institute of the Wyoming National Guard nominated May for the award, because she is tolerant and supportive of Snook’s military service requirements.
Additional, May created an environment where employees and their families are the priority and she encourages the furtherance of their military careers. Snook said May is understanding when given short notice to perform
military duties.
