WHEATLAND – The Platte County Historical Society will pick up its fall session with a program on Tuesday, Sept. 24, about Wyoming’s Militia of Women. The meeting is free and open to the public, and will be held at the Platte County Library beginning at 7 p.m. You are encouraged to bring family and friends.
Author and historian Dan Lyon will be the special guest. Dan developed an interest in military and Wyoming history while serving at F. E. Warren AFB. During his tour the Heritage Museum located on the base was selected twice for the prestigious Air Force space command Museum of the Year award. In addition to publishing “Girl Guards of Wyoming: The Forgotten Women’s Militia,” he has won numerous prizes in the National Collegiate Press Association competition. He’s currently working on several things about Wyoming’s history including its first military aviator; the Fort D.A. Russell Cemetery, and the heroes and villains of Fort D.A. Russell.
The Platte County Historical Society is a chapter of the Wyoming State Historical Society. Membership includes receiving Annals of Wyoming three times a year, Wyoming History News, notices of special events such as treks to historic sites, award opportunities, and more. Meetings designed to highlight local and state history are held the last Tuesday of every month and are open to the public.
