WHEATLAND – Last Monday, sitting in second place in the 3A Southeast Conference, the Lady Bulldogs knew that they had their work cut out for them as Conference leader, Douglas was coming to town on Tuesday afternoon and 3A Northeast conference leader, Buffalo was coming to Wheatland Friday.
It took only seven games to establish a new leader of the pack as the Bulldogs defeated Douglas in three straight games and then went on to defeat Buffalo in four games. The Bulldogs have now won nine straight matches and will face another top team in 4A East powerhouse Laramie on the road.
“The No. 5 ranked Lady Bulldogs came through clutch this week as they defeated the No. 3 and No. 4 ranked teams in 3A,” said head volleyball coach Sally Nichols. “Our gals took on the Douglas Bearcats on Tuesday in front of a great crowd and a raucous student section. Douglas couldn't come up with an answer to strong hitting, tough blocking, and tenacious defense from the Bulldogs. WHS won 25-17, 25-22, 25-21, improving their conference record to 3-0. All three levels got the sweep.”
Leading the way for the Varsity squad were: Anna Matthews with 8 kills and 7 blocks, Grace Battershell with 3 aces and 22 assists, Desirae Iacovetto and Lily Nichols with 4 blocks each, and Kendall Schaffner with 18 digs.
“On Friday night the Bulldogs took on No. 4 ranked Buffalo at home,” Nichols said. “Our gals knew the Bison would be tough competition as this was the third time they have played this season, the first two matches they split. But our ladies prevailed and took Buffalo in 4 sets: 25-21, 18-25, 25-23 and 25-13, improving their season record to 17-7. Once again a great student section celebrating "white out" night and solid community support provided a great atmosphere for a home match. In addition the WHS Band was in full force and truly gave our athletes the push they needed to finish the match. The WHS volleyball program would like to thank everyone for coming out and encourage anyone that hasn't caught a match to watch next Saturday as they take on Newcastle at home.”
