WHEATLAND – There were volleyballs flying in multiple locations Aug. 29 as the Lady Bulldogs hosted their own Wheatland Quad. Not only hosted, but dominated. In Varsity and JV.
Both the Varsity and JV teams went undefeated Saturday in matches against Upton, Wright and Pine Bluffs.
Perhaps one of the most challenging games of the day was the third set against Upton who had played them point for point into the later stages of the game. The kills looked to be more “wounds” as it seemed as if the girls became a little tentative.
“That’s something we work on,” Varsity coach Lindsay Schaffner said. “It’s about keeping momentum up going into a game three. This team is still super young and doesn’t quite know how to come out and finish. Last year we were more on the losing end of it a lot of times. When it got close in the end at 25-25, definitely it became more tentative and I think they were just trying to keep that ball in.”
Obviously the girls and coaches had the right game plan and their backing off on what got them there in that tenacious attack style worked in their favor. They showed moxie and grit down the stretch, never let the momentum waves sink their boat and they kept an even temperament through that trial.
It proved to themselves that they can win those close ones down the stretch.
Matching their intensity and grit is the hard work put into their training and gaining the odds on hitting efficiency.
“We have really been working on hitting efficiency this season,” Schaffner said. “It’s one of our main areas of focus. And defense and serve receive are huge areas of focus.”
