Lady Bulldogs gain two wins

DOUGLAS – The Wheatland girls basketball team picked up their first two victories of the 2018-19 season at the Douglas Classic Friday and Saturday to improve to 2-4 on the season.
Wheatland opened tournament play Friday with a 41-22 victory over Big Piney, and snagged a 41-38 over Lovell Saturday morning before eventually falling to Torrington 59-55 in a non-quadrant contest Saturday afternoon.
Against Big Piney, the Bulldogs ran out to a 10-9 lead at the end of the first period and held the Punchers to two second-quarter points to extend out to an 18-11 lead at intermission. Wheatland’s defense continued to harass Big Piney in the second half, holding the Punchers to five points in the third and six in the fourth to grab their first victory of the season.

Danielle Brow led all scorers with 14 points, 12 rebounds and six steals. Brow was one of nine Bulldogs who scored on the evening.
Jodie Stevenson added five points and five rebounds, while Loren Mann had four points and five rebounds and Rory Anderson had four points and four rebounds. Khayla Otero had three points, five steals, three rebounds and two assists for Whealtand, while Alyssa Matthews,  Miranda Hanks and Destiny Cook had three points apiece. Kyra Calfy added two points and two rebounds for Wheatland.
Wheatland hit on 16-of-67 shots from the field and 8-of-21 from the free-throw line in the victory. The Bulldogs finished with 17 steals on the defensive side and committed just six turnovers.
Individual stats for contests against Lovell and Torrington were not available at press time.
