January: Sheriff’s Dept. welcomes newest K9 deputy

WHEATLAND – The Platte County Sheriff’s office has a special new deputy on the force in the ongoing fight against drug trafficking in the area.
Platte County Deputy Wes Thomas recently returned to duty with Maxine, a pit bull mix specially trained to detect drugs.

Maxine was trained in Texas and is part of an ongoing program to provide drug detecting dogs to law enforcement agencies across the country.
Sheriff Clyde Harris said that, eventually, his department will have four drug detecting dogs, which will rotate on a 24/7 duty basis, with a fourth dog currently being trained in Texas.
“In a perfect world, all of my deputies would have their own K-9 unit,” Harris said. “It’s a great program and it’s been
very effective.”
