In and Around Wheatland 100 Years Ago

The bond issue regarding a new power plant in Wheatland passed by a vote of 124 to 4.
County School Superintendent Winifred Banner is working hard to establish a Red Cross chapter in every school in the county. A fee of 25 cents is being asked of each student enrolled, which can be a personal contribution or a sum raised by a public entertainment of some kind. Miss Krueger is supervising the Junior Red Cross girls in Wheatland who have so far made 95 bandages and knitted 14 scarves, 10 pairs of wristlets and two sweaters. She has also started a sewing club for girls with instruction in dressmaking.
A new chemistry table has been constructed by Mr. Whalen during his spare moments from his janitorial services at the high school (note from Patsy: I wonder if this is the science table in one of the classrooms at Libbey). A new chemistry instructor, Miss Cornett from Oklahoma, has been hired. This is the first time chemistry has been offered and is a welcome addition to the curriculum.

The high school basketball team has added three more to their long list of unbroken victories, taking on Laramie, Cheyenne and Rawlins and “trimming them all.”
“A Wyoming zephyr whooping things up” made it impossible to begin spudding the first oil well near Wheatland since a fire couldn’t be stoked and the water pipe from the well to the boiler had frozen up and broken.
Virgil Buchanan and Miss May Rogers, both of Slater, were married in front of Judge Scheie. George Simmons has died after suffering for many months with a tumor on the brain. His 10 young children have been taken care of in various homes since their mother died almost a year ago.
New regulations are raising the standard for teachers, requiring them to complete a 12-week course of study to qualify for a teaching certificate. All school boards are being urged to raise teaching salaries to $80 or even $100 per month.
The Swan Land and Cattle Co. office and the bunk house in Chugwater were damaged by fire. All company records were destroyed except those in the safe.
