Guernsey-Sunrise hopes to qualify athletes for ‘Best of the West’
PINE BLUFFS – The girls had an 11th place finish as the boys placed in the top 10 at the Kendra Roeder Invitational in Pine Bluffs.
The weather was cold with winds and icy wind chills, but the athletes did well in adverse weather.
As of right now, Caleb Christensen has pre-qualified for state in the shot and discus and Jacob Roper is knocking on the door in discus, and Troy Reichert, head track coach hopes to get him pre-qualified this coming week.
“Juliana Schiele is her own worst critic,” said throwing coach Jeanette Christensen. “But she pre-qualified in the pole vault. She's not happy if she doesn't clear 8 feet, but if we could get a warm day, I know she'll get there.”
The team has a lot of athletes who continue to PR in their events, although they aren't always making the top eight in their event.
“As regionals get closer, we just hope to get our kids to understand what it takes in practice to compete in meets,” Christensen said. “School schedules have been crazy lately with lots of kids gone to various activities. Hopefully we can get the kids to battle and push themselves in the next couple of meets to earn their right to compete at state.”
Best of the West in Scottsbluff has been moved to May 2nd due to poor weather this week so that means more time in training rather than in competition.
Christiansen and Schiele are close, so coaches are hoping they can qualify for that meet by doing well in Wright this weekend.
On the junior high side, there are a handful of kids that have been excelling, while others are learning new events or just working to improve their coordination and speed.
Jayden Wagner-Gross leads the area in the 100 and 200, and is sitting at or near the top in both events for the Best of the West meet on May 2.
“Joey Lewis has been getting stronger all year in the shot and disc,” Christensen said. “He needs a strong meet this weekend to earn a spot in the Best of the West. Dymond Dimas is performing well in her events, and will attempt to qualify for the Best of the West in the high jump.”
