WHEATLAND — The Veterans of Foreign Wars Auxiliary of Wheatland awarded its first scholarship for a graduating student of Platte County School District No. 1. Meagan VanBuskirk, of Glendo, was awarded the $500 scholarship at the auxiliary’s joint installation of new officers May 11.
The award decision was difficult; the auxiliary received quite a few applications. VanBuskirk was chosen for many reasons. The auxiliary hopes to continue offering scholarships to local graduating seniors in the future.
The next event the auxiliary sponsors is the Patriotic Business Window decorating contest. Wheatland isn’t very busy for the 4th of July other than the fireworks display that is sponsored by the Wheatland Volunteer Fire Department. The VFW Auxiliary urges businesses to show their patriotism by decorating their store front windows with a patriotic theme.
This will include all businesses in Wheatland. The business may decorate however they choose — paint the windows, patriotic display in the windowsill, patriotic pictures, etc. The auxiliary encourages businesses to participate to show how important it is for residents and travelers alike to show their patriotism on this national patriotic holiday. The VFW Auxiliary is always spreading the word about patriotism, flag etiquette and supporting veterans and their families for all of the sacrifices they have made.

Each business will be asked to pay a $25 entry fee for the window decorating contest. The business owner may decorate their window themselves or have a group or class decorate their store front window. Each participating business will be given voting tickets for individuals to purchase to vote for their favorite store front window. The business with the most tickets will be the people’s choice for the auxiliary’s Patriotic Window Display.
The voting tickets will be 10 cents each or 12 tickets for $1. The auxiliary will provide the tickets to the participating businesses. An award will be given to the winning business. The deadline for entering this contest is June 22. A form is available for the business to complete. Anyone is encouraged to decorate their window without entering the contest as well.
The proceeds from this event will help the auxiliary support veterans and their families. The auxiliary helps local veterans with any needs they may have.
Americanism is one program the auxiliary sponsors in communities, schools and more. The auxiliary also sponsors the Patriotic Art Contest each year, and there are scholarships available for the winners that can advance from the local level to the national level.
The VFW Auxiliary will also sponsor a Freedom Fest at the Green Harvest Festival on Aug. 25.  This is a family oriented event to bring awareness to the community about the auxiliary and what it does for veterans and their families, as well as have some fun. It will be located at the pocket park in downtown Wheatland from 10:30 a.m. until about 1 p.m. There will be children’s activities such as games, face painting, food and treats, and all sorts of things to do.  We will also be visiting with people about what our organization does, how we support our veterans, visiting about current events that affect our veterans and their families, and recruiting new members. More information about this event will be available soon.
For more information about upcoming events or to enter the window decorating contest, contact Ruth Herdt at 331-1286 or any other auxiliary member.
