WHEATLAND — A grass fire started on June 29 at 959 Ash St. as a result of unsupervised children playing with fireworks.

The fire spread from the grass to the wooden fences between 959 Ash St. and 957 Ash St. It continued to burn the field behind the properties as well as other old fencing. The fire also destroyed the electrical box feeding several houses in the area, causing a lack of power several hours, as well as a Vyve Internet cabline line above the ground.
The Wheatland Fire Department and Wheatland Police were immediately called to the scene. A neighbor at 957 Ash St., Dixie Baez, contained the fire on the ground and the fence with a garden hose until the fire department arrived at the scene. The flames on the fences grew to as tall as 12-15 feet high.
Later that afternoon, the city worked to restore the electrical and Internet services.
