‘Fire Box’ to provide safer training environment

WHEATLAND – The Wheatland Volunteer Fire Department recently purchased a Max Fire Box to assist in training. Funds for the tool were donated by the community and it’s hoped the device will help local firefighters learn new techniques and the science behind fighting house fires.

The Fire Box is used to simulate house fires on a miniature scale. When material is ignited inside the box, firefighters can observe the behavior of a fire without having to be exposed to potentially dangerous training conditions. The progress of the fire an also be controlled and firefighters can see how different techniques will work.

“The purpose of the fire box is to increase firefighter safety and training safety,” said Shawn Bloemaker, developer of the Fire Box. He was in Wheatland in January to demonstrate its use to volunteers from Wheatland and the surrounding region.

In addition to use at the Wheatland VFD Training Center, the device will be part of future safety demonstrations at local middle and high school, WVFD Chief Bob
