Camp Invention Returns to Platte County

For Wyoming Newspapers

WHEATLAND - Camp Invention, the nationally acclaimed program of the National Inventor’s Hall of Fame, was held at West Elementary recently. Camp Invention is a weeklong summer day program for students entering Kindergarten through sixth grade. The program engages children to discover their own innate creativity and inventiveness through hands-on science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) content. Camp Invention programs benefit more than 118,000 children and partner with 2200 schools across the nation.

Camp Invention has been held in Platte County for the past 16 years and was directed by Katy Marquez and Cindy Amundson. This year we had 80 campers in grades K-6th. Our high school camp counselors were Nichole Biggs, Mauriccio Grimaldo, Gavin May, and Bayley Lockman. Middle school volunteers were Peyton Teten, Bailey Tatro, Belle Witt, Andrea Fox, Erika Biggs, Sienna Freeman, Kaylee Weber, and Kaylee Breeden.

This summer’s program is entitled WONDER and presented new material and challenges from all previous years, including: Catching Air, Invention Celebration, MimicBot, and Pop-Up Venture. These modules were taught by Trista Teten, Heather Tatro, Denise McDaniel, Kade Preuit, and Kellie Preuit. Students designed their own skate park, became party planners, transformed robots, and designed their own business!

Each day children rotate through the four different modules that employ creative thinking to solve real-world challenges. Students focus on problem solving and critical thinking, in addition to collaboration with others.

We would like to thank the Wyoming Community Foundation for the generous allocations of funding that was used to provide funding support to students. The Libbey PTO and West Elementary PTO also provided full scholarships to students at each grade level based on teacher recommendations. Thank you to Platte County School District #1 Food Service, directed by Marie Allison, for providing the morning snack and lunch.

We would also like to extend a special thanks to our amazing community members and businesses as well: LARAMIE PEAK MOTORS, FIRST STATE BANK, ROLLING HILLS BANK, PLATTE VALLEY BANK, TRAVIS AND AMALIA WITT, AND AN ANONYMOUS DONOR INSPIRED BY GOD TO GIVE. They provided generous donations that enabled the high school camp counselors a stipend for their hard work throughout the week. We couldn’t have done it without them!
