GREYBULL - The Wheatland Bulldogs wrapped up their regular season with a trip 200 miles north to Moorcroft to take on the Wolves.
Moorcroft is known for its outstanding state championship wrestling teams. Their offensive and defensive lines are loaded with wrestlers and their athleticism, and gave the Bulldogs fits to start the game.
Wheatland has dominated the series since entering the 2A east, outscoring Moorcroft 129-19 in 4 prior games. On Friday, the Bulldogs would encounter an improved opponent. Wheatland took the opening possession 65 yards and scored on Trevor Vaughn’s 3-yard run to jump out to an 8-0 lead. Wheatland’ s offense would take their second possession to the Moorcroft 2-yard line and turn the ball over on a fumbled snap. Moorcroft bounced back and put together a 98-yard drive and scored on a 30-yard run to tie the game 8-8.
The teams would exchange turnovers in the second quarter with the Bulldogs taking over at the 50 yard line. Wheatlands offense continued their outstanding play of late with a nice drive that included a 25-yard screen pass to Zac Gunter and a 21-yard TD run by Trevor Vaughn. Following a failed 2-point conversion, Wheatland jumped to a 14-8 lead. The Bulldogs struggled to contain the Wolves rushing attack but would come up with 3 stops on 4th down in the second half.
Interceptions by Dylan Pearson (2), Drake Amundson and Colten Caves kept the Wolves off the scoreboard despite several drives deep into Wheatland territory.
Wyatt Crane blasted into the end-zone following a huge collision to put Wheatland up 22-8 near the end of the third quarter.
Colten Caves added a nifty 90-yard touchdown run, his longest of his career, by breaking several tackles to put the game out of reach 28-8.
Wheatland, the no. 2 seed in the 2A east, will face the red-hot no. 3 Greybull Buffaloes this Friday at home.
Greybull and Wheatland both come into Friday’s game with long winning streaks. This is the third straight season that the Bulldogs will face Greybull in the state quarterfinals.
