Bulldogs sending 16 athletes to state

RAWLINS – The Wheatland High School track teams did well at the 3A East Regional Track and Field Championships in Rawlins last weekend. There are seven girls and nine boys that have qualified for state.

The girls finished fourth place in the track and field championship while the boys took fifth place.

“The weather outlook was pretty bleak early in the week for the regional track meet in Rawlins,” coach Matt Hazen said. “It was supposed to rain both days and have some lower temperatures. Thankfully, the weather held off and there was little to no moisture during the track meet. The temp was cool both days, but was great to compete in. The athletes did well this year with 16 athletes punching their tickets to the state event. We had two school records get broken at the regional meet and we had many personal bests. It was a great meet, and we are looking forward to the state competition.”

Athletes qualifying for state for state include: Bryce Stenson, Laynie Goertz, Cole Goertz, Grace Battershell, Tagg Mickelsen, Kacey Otero, Tyler Bohnen, Desirae Iacovetto, Simon May, Lily Nichols, Abad Luna, Paige Fredericks, Ethan Jackson, Mylie Benson, Wyatt Weber and Clayton Dahlstedt.

Lily Nichols broke the 300-meter hurdle record for the high school with a time of 46.89. The previous record was set in 1992 by A. Johnston and was a time of 47.39. Nichols set the new record during prelims first with a time of 47.18 then she broke her own record during finals with her final time of 46.89.

Laynie Goertz, Grace Battershell, Kacey Otero and Desirae Iacovetto set a new school record for the girls 4x100-meter relay with a time of 51.22. The previous record was set in 2022 by Otero, Kayla Beaman, Laynie Goertz and Iacovetto. They won the event and are regional champions.
