CASPER — Five Wheatland Bulldogs participated in their first cross country meet of the season, the Kelly Walsh Beartrap Invitational held on Casper Mountain last Friday, cross country coach Joe Wilson reported Monday.
Several 2A, 3A, and 4A teams competed in the varsity, junior varsity and middle school divisions. Wheatland had runners in every division except varsity boys.
“This meet was a great opportunity for our team to establish a baseline for the rest of the season,” Wilson stated in an email. “I was pleased with how each student-athlete competed on a tough course against top notch competition.
“Grace Hanni did great for her first ever cross country race and will only get better for us as the season progresses. Raylee Buchanan ran a strong second half of the race to pass several runners and finish in the top half of the race.”

Wilson added Kaesha Davis has probably finished her best race in a Bulldog uniform as she notched a top 10 finish in the girls junior varsity division.
Katie Currier, the only senior on the team, ran a tough race in the girls varsity division, Wilson reported.
“It was quite warm by the time she ran, and she battled throughout the entire race,” Wilson stated.
On the boys side, freshman Matthew Streets recorded a top 25 finish in his first ever high school cross country race.
“I believe there is a lot of potential with this group of runners,” Wilson stated.
Wilson said the team was missing a couple runners last weekend due to injury/lack of practices; he and assistant coach Sally Nichols are looking forward to competing this Friday at the Rawlins Invite.
