DOUGLAS – The Wheatland Boys basketball team finished their season this weekend at the 3A East Regional Tournament in Douglas. As the No. 4 seed, Wheatland faced the 19-4 Buffalo Bison, the top team in the state.

Buffalo had their way with Wheatland two weeks ago in a 27-point victory and looked to have an easy first round game against the Bulldogs.

Wheatland fell behind 23-8 at halftime. In the fourth quarter, Wheatland clawed back to within seven and looked poised to cut the lead to five but a Bulldogs turnover and quick three-pointer by the Bison stretched the lead back to 10. Wheatland never got closer than 10, dropping the game 41-31. Buffalo’s full court press forced 27 Bulldog turnovers.

Wheatland held Buffalo to their lowest point total of the year.

Trevor Vaughn led the Bulldogs with 10 points followed by Trigg Peasley with seven and Zac Gunter with four.

In Saturday’s loser out game two, Wheatland faced the Torrington Trailblazers. Wheatland split home and away games with the Blazers this year. In their 60-59 double overtime win on Feb. 16, Wheatland’s leading scorer, Peasley, scored 19 on the Blazers.

On Saturday, Peasley was double-teamed and could not get on track offensively. Wheatland fell behind 10-0 to start the game. Gunter played well, keeping Wheatland close in the second half and ending with a team high 10 points. Wheatland pulled to within 26-22 in the third quarter but could not get shots to drop in the fourth, scoring only five in the final period.

Wheatland fell 48-27.

Mitch Pollock finished with eight points and five players added two apiece in the loss. Torrington fell to Newcastle on Saturday and failed to make the state tournament.

Highlights this year for the team included big road victories at rivals Douglas and Torrington. Wheatland won both on the road for the first time since 2013. Wheatland loses senior starters Peasley, Gunter and Vaughn as well as senior contributors Jamison Brown, Joey Madsen, Cole Adams, Justin Lema and Braydon Billing to graduation.

The Bulldogs return starters Colton Caves and Clayton Iacovetto next year along with three sophomores who played key minutes this year: Pollock, Luke Anderson and Kobey Preuit.

The Bison will join Rawlins, Worland and Newcastle from the east at next week’s 3A state tournament in Casper.
