Battershell, Otero rule the track

Battershell, Otero rule the track

CASPER – Wheatland Lady Bulldogs Rachel Battershell and Khayla Otero combined for five first-place finishes on the track, guiding the Wheatland girls to a fourth-place finish at the Glen Legler Memorial Early Bird Invite in Casper on Saturday.

Battershell picked up where she left off last year, controlling the short distances. She finished first in the 100-meter dash with a time of 13.11, which she paired with another gold in the 200, clocking a time of 27.33. She also squeaked out a win by 0.02 seconds in the 100-meter hurdles, posting a time of 15.74.

In events where Battershell didn’t compete, Otero carried the torch. In the 400, Otero posted a time of 1:05.32, along with a time of 2:38.96 in the 800, both were winning times. She also found herself 10th in the 100 with a time of 13.90 seconds. Otero finished her day by taking seventh in the long jump with a 14-foot, 8.5-inch effort.

Rounding out the placers, the foursome of Christina Haroldson, Haylee Kenison, Hollie Kenison and Natalie Iacovetto took third in the 400-meter relay with a time of 58.51 seconds. Haroldson also snagged a seventh-place finish in the pole vault after clearing 7 feet.

Haroldson also competed in the 100, posting a time of 15.39 seconds (57th), just behind Haylee Kenison’s 15.28 seconds (53rd). Iacovetto finished 36th in the same event with a time of 14.85 seconds. Also in the sprints, Rory Anderson took 50th in the 200 with a time of 34.41 seconds.

A pair of Lady Bulldogs competed in the 1,600-meter run, with Katie Currier taking 25th with a time of 7:05.31 and Marie Wigard clocking a time of 9:41.67 to finished 29th.

Haroldson rounded out her long day by joining Otero in the long jump, taking 19th with a 13-foot, 5.25-inch effort.

In the throws, Iacovetto took 42nd in the shot put (25 feet, 2.5 inches) and 62nd in the discus (57 feet). Anderson stepped up in the discus with a throw of 80 feet, 9 inches to take 23rd, while finishing 44th in the shot put with a put of 24 feet, 5.5 inches. Rounding out the throwers, Wigard took 76th in the shot put (15 feet, 6.5 inches).

The Lady Bulldogs finished fourth overall with 60 points, only behind three 4A schools. Kelly Walsh took the top spot with 130 points, with Natrona County (110.5) also eclipsing the century mark. Rock Springs rounded out the top three with 76 points.

Wheatland returns to action Friday at the Natrona Invitational in Casper at 10 a.m.
