Barbara Breeding

Barbara Breeding was born Aug. 13, 1932 in Las Vegas, Nev. She passed away Sept. 19. Her father worked on the Boulder Dam as an electrician and when he died in 1935 her mother moved them back to Wheatland to be near family.
Barbara graduated from high school there in 1950 and attended the University of Wyoming. She taught at a country school after her freshman and sophomore years. She had one student her first year and two students the second year. She graduated in 1955 and taught high school physical education and was a guidance counselor in Jackson Wyoming High School.
Barbara then attended University of Colorado where she earned a masters degree in physical education. She taught at Western State College for six years. She went to Washington State University where she earned a Ph.D. in physical education and administration. She then taught at the University of Wyoming as coordinator of women’s physical education. She promoted sports competition for women and coached basketball.
Leaving teaching in 1972 she returned to Gunnison and bought Sportsman’s Liquor. Two of the winters she coached women’s basketball at University of Denver. In 1986 she and partners opened the Western World which she ran for 30 years.
