WHEATLAND — University of Wyoming Platte County Extension staff and local dignitaries joined Wheatland High School in celebration of UW’s second signing day event at the WHS auditorium last Wednesday. The WHS 2018 class valedictorian, Hannah Nelson, and salutatorian, Emily Wright, were also announced during the event.
Both Nelson and Wright signed with UW.
WHS seniors signing with UW last Wednesday include:

Chandler Bohnen

Jon Ferguson
Zach Gunter

Sara Horsley

Wendy Luna Garcia
Joseph Madsen
Christian Moody
Hannah Nelson
Chase Nickle
Ryan Pollock
Reid Putnam
John Sarad
Roman Smith
Emily Wright

As their names were announced by Platte County Commission Chairman Steve Shockley, students emerged from the gallery onto the stage and signed their letters of intent to attend UW. Shockley shared that he graduated WHS about 32 years ago and then attended UW.
“I am pleased to see students who want to further their education at UW,” Shockley said.
Wheatland Mayor Joe Fabian also attended the event but did not speak.
Wyoming 4-H partnered with UW Extension, a branch of the UW College of Agriculture, to conduct the signing, Platte County 4-H youth development educator Stacy Buchholz said during an interview Thursday.
“We took it upon ourselves to help admissions with this so we could have a signing day in every county,” Buchholz said.
Buchholz explained May 1 is the day universities can start disbursing federal funds, so they like to collect signatures from students around this time of year to show how many are committed to attending university.
Buchholz said UW signing day is an opportunity for the university to make a fun day for students and show which students are committed to attending UW.
“I just think it’s a really fun way to congratulate students on their achievements and recognize the only four-year university in the state,” Buchholz said.
