WHEATLAND – The Wheatland Lady Bulldogs wrapped up WHS Basketball for the season over the weekend in Casper at the 3A State Tournament.
The girls faced off against the Star Valley Lady Braves for their first game on Thursday. Star Valley, which was ranked #1 in their 3A West Region, took a lead of 6 points at the end of the first quarter, which ended 16-10.
Wheatland was able to stay within 10 points through the first half, which ended 30-22 Star Valley.
Wheatland was able to take the lead twice during the game, and tied up with the Lady Braves 4 times during the game, however, the second half game the Lady Braves the advantage they needed to seal a lead over the Lady Bulldogs.
The Lady Braves continued to lead in the second half, taking in 18 points over Wheatland’s 4 in the third quarter, and 11 more in the final quarter, bringing the final score to 59-33.
Both teams had high turnover rates during the game, with 23 for Wheatland, and 20 for Star Valley. The Lady Braves were also 14-22 at the free throw line, compared with Wheatland, who was able to make 6 of the 13 attempts they were given.
Star Valley also led in rebounds, with 52 to Wheatland’s 29. Both teams stayed close for steals, with Wheatland making 8, and Star Valley taking 9.
Wheatland Senior Shelby Connolly was the high scorer for the game, one of four players who were able to sink any points during the game. She had 15 points, 3 rebounds, and 2 steals. Senior Avery Hanks was able to give Wheatland 7 rebounds, and 5 blocks.
Kayla Buchannan contributed 9 points, 4 rebounds, and 1 steal.
On Friday morning, Wheatland played in the consolation bracket against the Lyman Lady Eagles.
After taking the lead one time and tying up with the Lady Eagles twice, Wheatland fell behind in the first quarter, which ended 22-11. Wheatland continued to struggle against the Lady Eagles, who were up 38-24 at the halftime buzzer.
While the teams were more equally matched in the second half, with the third quarter ending 10-9 Lyman and the final quarter ending 12-7 Lyman, the Lady Eagles ended the game with a comfortable 20-point lead of 60-40.
Buchannan led the scoring for the Lady Bulldogs, with 14 points, and 2 steals. Bailey Tillman followed in the scoring with 8 points, and 8 rebounds, and Connolly had 7 points 7 rebounds, and 2 steals.
As a team, Wheatland led Lyman in blocked shots 6-2. The teams both had high turnovers, with 17 for Wheatland, 16 for Lyman. Lyman had 13 personal fouls, and Wheatland had 11.
The Lady Eagles went on to win the Consolation bracket and take third at the tournament.
While basketball has wrapped up for the Bulldogs this year, there were still more honors for several players who stood out statewide and were nominated for the All-Conference and All-State teams. For the Wheatland Bulldogs’ boys basketball team, Senior Brody West was honored with All-Conference and All-State titles for 2017.
Connolly returned on the roster for the All-State and Conference teams this year as well.
